Benefits

The collection of biometric or crime scene samples is a key step in the investigation process. As critical as this step is, however, traditional collection tools such as swabs and FTA cards leave significant room for error or unusable samples. After collection, inadequate resources can often lead to a backlog of several weeks or months to process the samples, therefore increasing the possibility of yielding invalid results. Factors that can negatively impact sample integrity include: improper storage and transport which leads to bacterial or mold growth, DNases and RNases released by collected cells can degrade DNA rapidly, and over-drying of the sample can result in the irreversible binding of DNA. The iSWAB-ID device represents a significant advancement in sample collection and stabilization technology. Our proprietary system overcomes the hurdles associated with current methods and offers a non-hazardous, non-toxic effective alternative that does not degrade or contaminate collected evidentiary samples. Unlike processing traditional swabs, collecting samples with iSWAB-ID allows for multiple runs for analysis and archiving purposes. Collected samples are stable over 3 years at room temperature storage (based on accelerated stability testing).

Product Description

iSWAB-ID is an efficient sample collection system for evidentiary and reference DNA samples, which enables long-term room temperature stabilization of collected samples at the point of the collection while ensuring a proper chain of custody. Typically yields 2-7μg (iSWAB-ID) of DNA with <3% bacterial contamination. This system allows for maximizing sample recovery and obtaining human DNA compatible with ID profiling assays. DNA extraction can be performed using any commercially available whole-blood extraction chemistry.

Intended Use

iSWAB-ID Human DNA Collection Kit is a DNA sample collection device for the collection, stabilization, concentration, storage, and transport of evidentiary DNA samples. It is a non-invasive swab-based sampling applicator and is intended to be used for a sample collection from various sample types including Touch DNA, Reference Samples, buccal cells, blood spots, sweat, semen, and any other bodily fluids. iSWAB-ID has been shown to efficiently recover and stabilize DNA of forensic significance at the point of collection.

Indication for Use (from IFU)

This system allows for maximizing sample recovery and obtaining human DNA compatible with ID profiling assays. Collected samples are stable for 3 years at room temperature storage (based on accelerated stability testing).

Storage and Stability

Pre-collection: 3 years from date of manufacture between 15-30° C.
Transport temperature, post-collection: 15-30° C.
Sample stability and storage, post-collection: 60 days real-time and 3 years accelerated time.

If longer storage time is required, collected samples can be stored at -20 to -80° C.
